Should the MBA get involved with legislation?

We've generally avoided getting drawn into these sorts of things because they are a potential minefield that might end up causing dissension within the MBA. We did agree to sign on to an Amicus Brief in the Apple case but that's about it. I am starting to wonder whether we need to survey the membership of the MBA about changing that - and getting involved on certain blogger-specific issues.

A few weeks ago I receieved a call from a state legislator in Maryland about getting involved with him on a state bill protecting bloggers. I heard recently from an advocacy group in DC concerned about proposed amendments to the ethics rules governing lawyer advertising in New York. And tonight I heard from a member that under Section 220 of S. 1 of the lobbying reform bill currently before the Senate, bloggers who have more than 500 readers will have to register and report quarterly to Congress just like lobbiests or go to jail.

Any thoughts?
